Hey, Friend! I’m Kelly!

We started homeschooling when our oldest boy was 4 years old. Well, it wasn’t really homeschooling as much as a flexible, structured day. We had two little boys at that time, and I was pregnant with our third child. After that child was born (our third son), I was introduced to homeschooling by my cousin, who had started teaching her own children at home.

I think it was around January, or February, when I found a local homeschooling group and joined (yes, before we officially started). I attended every meeting, and picked the brains of as many of the members as I could. What curriculum did they use? How did they manage infants and toddlers? When did they get their laundry done?

And I called multiple companies who offered homeschooling curriculum. (This was before the Internet made things so much easier.) At that time, there was still a lot of “school at home” options. I knew I didn’t want that. I knew my boys needed to move and explore and be hands-on with their learning. I came across two different programs that were considered unit studies. The first one was based on character traits, which they backed up with Bible verses.

Then I looked at the second one — The Weaver Curriculum — and knew I had found what God wanted me to use.

Keep in mind, I was a fairly new Christian back then. I knew that using Weaver would help my children learn more about God, and I wanted to learn right along with them!

Over the years, I’ve always used Weaver as our base for Bible, history, and science. I added math, of course, and extras like art, accounting, computer sciences, etc. I took advantage of co-op classes in high school for science and math classes, and the local tech school for computer, criminal justice, automotive, and childcare classes.

While I have never regretted homeschooling my children, there were times when I wondered what would be different if I hadn’t. But, as they’ve grown and flown, and started their own lives, I can now look back and say, “This was right. This curriculum was right. God is ALWAYS right.”

Life has not always been easy. But homeschooling made it easier. If we needed to travel with Dad, we could pack up our needed books and go. If we chose to, we could take a week off of studies and just do math. Or ditch everything in favor of a nature notebook while we spent the week exploring parks and national monuments.

When my first graduated from high school, I cried. But not nearly as hard as when my youngest graduated, because that day, I knew, *I* had graduated, too. My children are all amazing people. They have made me a “Military Mom” (twice!), a “Grammy” (five times, so far!), and a “Traveler” since they have spread themselves across the USA. And they are all intelligent: mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

I still have all of my Weaver volumes and the resources that I collected over the years. I’ve sold or given away some of my math and science books, but for the most part I am still ready and willing to talk to anyone who wants info about homeschooling.
